Party in the Park(ing lot) @ 05:13 pm
The mayor announced the lineup for Party in the Park today.
I still don't think it should be called Party in the Park when it's not actually in a park. It used to be at Manhattan Square Park and it was awesome, but the endless contruction there has meant that other sites needed to be found. I am kind of intruiged by the new location, though, and this lineup, especially for free, is nothing to sneeze at:
Molly Hatchet and 50/50, June 5.
moe. and Reid Genauer, June 12.
Big Bad Voodoo Daddy’s tribute to Rochester native Cab Calloway, June 19. This falls right in the midst of the Rochester International Jazz Festival. Lady Rose opens.
The Texas blues of the Chris Duarte Group and Chris Beard, June 26.
A local showcase, The Joe Beard Blues Explosion, with the John Cole Blues Band and Steve Grills, July 3.
The Latin roots-music giants Los Lobos, Tumbao and the White Devils, July 10.
Local reggae-jam band Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad and Black August, July 17.
Blues guitarist Duke Robillard and RedLine Zydeco, July 24.
Eddie Money, icon of ’70s radio, and the Todd Wolfe Blues Project, July 31.
Dickey Betts & Great Southern, and This Other Life, Aug. 7.

Falling behind again @ 01:06 am
I need to make a buch of responses and also catch up with various things, with any luck that will happen soon (once I get a weekend where I can stay at home). That is coming, for now I'm just noting that I'm within 7 days to my birthday, and I have no plans to actually do anything on the day itself. Maybe something will work out.

I was at Cobb's Hill last Thursday and it started to rain. I noticed that I could see the rain hitting the surface on the reservoir, so I decided to see if I could capture that with my camera. There were many more drops hitting the water today, but it was also too wet to pull out my camera.

I feel compelled to mention... @ 05:44 pm
...that 5 years ago I was in HSBC Arena in Buffalo to see Pearl Jam, for the 13th time. This show was the closest I show I've seen to my hometown, and it ended up being the first time I ever made the front row. And it was an amazing show, probably the best one from the first leg of the tour, long and strong and memorable. It was the first 3 disc boot of 2003, and I can listen to the 2nd disc of that bootleg almost endlessly.
...Really not much more I can say, other than some variation on "you had to have been there."

Definition of a soccer geek? @ 05:42 pm
The Rhinos have 2 home preseason games this week, on Monday and Wednesday, playing college teams. I was thinking about seeing them anyway, but I just now learned that there is no charge to go to the games, so, yeah.
And my brother may come up with the kids, so it could take on the trappings of an event. I was already thinking of making the home opener on May 17th a defacto birthday event, but that will depend on securing tickets first. They're actually selling well!

Five years ago today @ 10:35 pm
I was seeing Pearl Jam at the Coral Sky Amphitheater in West Palm Beach, Florida. It was a good show. During most of the morning, my first experience with a 10club line, I was acquiring the sunburn that would stay with me for the rest of my trip, through the show I never got into, and the show which shall not be mentioned. But this was the first show on the trip, and it was a great time, and a good memory.
I know now that I will be seeing Pearl Jam 3 times this summer, twice at MSG and once at Great Woods in Mansfield, MA. The Madison Square Garden shows will come about 2 weeks short of 5 years since the MSG shows of 2003. That means that those shows in particular will have a lot to live up to, but I'm not too concerned. I will also be seeing Radiohead 3 times this summer, twice at the All Points West festival and once at the Molson Amphitheatre in Toronto, where I have pit tickets.
This is shaping up to be a good summer.

w/ The Big Sleep and Portugal the Man
Water Street Music Hall
April 2, 2008
This was a really fun show. I came for the headliner, but I was pleasantly surprised by one of the openers. Portugal the Man was okay, some good songs and some songs that dragged. The Big Sleep was really good, primarily instrumental stuff, the bass player sang on a few songs but you could hardly make out what she as singing over the rest of the noise. For the first song the front man didn't even use his guitar, he had some kind of...instrument set up, it reminded me of something Jonny Greenwood would use, or maybe Gibby Haynes. But he used it for a great melody, and I think I'm going to have to track down their album now (could have gotten it at the merch stand, but I didn't think about it when I was there before the show...getting the hoodie. But yeah, The Big Sleep were really enjoyable and then MtB came out. I didn't get one song I was really hoping for, Houston We Have Uh Oh, but I did get I'm Totally Not Down With Rob's Alien and Get me Naked 2:Electric Boogaloo. And the encore was Absinthe Party at the Fly Honey Warehouse. Great show.
I have missed very many shows because I can't find somebody to go with and don't want to go by myself. I'm glad I didn't miss this one.

how do I feel?: excited, yet also concerned
It's kind of a striking coincidence that I only just developed this picture and posted it to Flickr:
( Because there was a tweet from the 10C today...Collapse )
2 shows on consecutive nights in Madison Square Garden. On the same nights of the week, incidentally, as they were back in 2003. The challenge for me is seeing if I can do this, and still have the PTO I'd need to do APW. This...will not be too easy.

Amtraking it @ 11:41 am
I just took some time to look at some schedules on amtrak.com. For both New York City (Liberty State Park for All Points West) and Toronto (Radiohead, August 15), there are afternoon trains from Rochester on the day I want to travel. That means that the PTO I need to use for those 2 shows will be only a half day each day. That's a good thing.

Photopost : fog pictures @ 08:37 pm
I like these pictures, although I can't help but think that they'd look better if I had had a digital camera at the time. Of course, since I've had the camera, I haven't been dowtown on a foggy night like that one. But I did just think that those kind of days will come along with springtime. Promising.
