Music, and venues, random thoughts @ 11:46 pm
the voice inside my head: Stacked Crooked - The New Pornographers
It's kind of a funny thing, but although I've seen a decent amount of concerts, very few of them have actually been in my home town. Part of that can be chalked up to the difficulty of a smaller city attracting the kind of bands that I want to see, but enough can be attributed to my own laziness, or lack of "get up and go" to see the marginal bands that I may like, if I give them a chance. Consequently, up until I saw NIN at the War Memorial in 2006 I hadn't really seen shows at the well known local venues. But lately I've been getting to them. At the beginning of March there was Henry Rollins at the Harro East Ballroom, and in the beginning of April I saw Minus the Bear with Portugal the Man and The Big Sleep at Water Street Music Hall (fka Horizontal Boogie Bar). In about two weeks, I'll be seeing Modest Mouse at the Main Street Armory. That's some decent progress. All in all, with these shows plus the Pearl Jam at the end of June and All Points West in August and Radiohead the week after that, not to mention the decent to good Parties in the Park, this will be a good summer for me, in the arena of live music. And that's a good thing.
